Tesla MOT: when it's due and what to check first
Teslas need an MOT like any other car. There's no emissions test, but tyres, brakes, lights and suspension are all checked — and those are exactly where Teslas tend to fail.
Last fact-checked: . General guidance — always check your own car's details and current official sources.
When it's due
When does a Tesla need its first MOT?
In England, Scotland and Wales a Tesla needs its first MOT when it is 3 years old, then every year after that. In Northern Ireland the first test is at 4 years. Being electric doesn't change this.
You can check when yours is due, and its full MOT history, on the official GOV.UK "Check MOT history" service using the registration number — and sign up there for a free reminder.
What gets tested
What does the MOT check on an electric car?
The same safety checks as a petrol car, minus the exhaust and emissions test: tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension, seatbelts, windscreen and wipers, mirrors, horn, bodywork for sharp edges, and the registration plates. Warning lights on the dashboard, including airbag and brake warnings, can also cause a fail.
Common fail points
Where Teslas commonly fail
- Tyres. Teslas are heavy and quick, so tyres — especially the inside edges — wear faster than many owners expect. Check all four, including the inner edge, before the test.
- Brakes. Because regenerative braking does most of the slowing, the brake discs are used less and can rust or pit, particularly in winter. A good test drive with some firm stops beforehand helps; badly corroded discs need replacing.
- Suspension. Worn suspension arms and bushes are a known issue on some older Model S and Model X cars.
- Lights and screen. Blown bulbs, cracked lenses and windscreen chips in the driver's line of sight are easy fails to avoid.
Where to go
Where can I get my Tesla MOT'd?
Any approved MOT test centre that tests cars can test a Tesla — you don't have to go to Tesla. It's still worth choosing a garage that sees electric cars regularly: they'll know where to lift it safely, how to brake-test it, and won't be thrown by a car with no engine.
Ask whether Tesla does MOTs at your local service centre in the Tesla app; many owners simply use an independent garage. Use our finder to see Tesla-capable garages near you, or browse by town and county.
If your car has air suspension (many Model S and Model X), turn on Jack Mode before it's lifted.
Quick answers
Common questions
Do Teslas need an MOT?
Yes. In Great Britain a Tesla needs its first MOT at 3 years old and then every year. In Northern Ireland the first test is at 4 years. Only the emissions test is skipped.
Can any garage do a Tesla MOT?
Any approved MOT test centre that tests cars can do it. A garage that regularly works on electric cars is a good choice because it will know the correct lifting points and how to brake-test a Tesla.
Why do Teslas fail MOTs?
The most common reasons are worn tyres (Teslas are heavy), corroded brake discs (regenerative braking means the brakes are used less), worn suspension parts on some older Model S and X, and lights or windscreen damage.
