Tesla brake calipers sticking and rusty discs: why it happens
Regenerative braking does most of the slowing in a Tesla, so the friction brakes can go weeks without real use. In the UK — with wet weather and salted winter roads — that leads to rusty discs and calipers that stick.

Why it happens
Why do Tesla brakes rust and seize?
When you lift off the accelerator, the motor slows the car and puts energy back into the battery. The brake pads only do real work in hard stops or at very low speed. Brakes that rarely get used, and rarely get warm, are prone to corrosion on the discs and to caliper slides and pistons sticking — a known pattern on all cars with strong regenerative braking, often worst on the rear axle.1
Tesla's own advice
What Tesla's maintenance schedule says
Tesla's Model 3 owner's manual lists: "Clean and lubricate brake calipers every year or 12,500 miles (20,000 km) if in an area where roads are salted during winter." It also lists a brake fluid health check every 4 years.2
Most of the UK salts its roads in winter, so for most UK owners the yearly caliper service applies. It's a cheap job compared with replacing seized calipers and pitted discs later.

Symptoms
Signs your brakes need attention
- A scraping or grinding noise, especially after the car has been parked for a while.
- A thick ring of rust on the inner part of the discs, or a disc surface that stays rough.
- One wheel noticeably hotter than the others after a drive, or a burning smell.
- The car pulling to one side under braking.
- An MOT advisory for "brake disc corroded" or "pitted". Brakes were an advisory on 10.4% of Tesla Model 3 initial MOTs in 2025.3
The fix
What the service involves
A proper brake service takes the wheels off: the garage inspects the pads and the back of the disc (not just what's visible through the wheel), cleans and lubricates the caliper slides, checks the pistons move freely, and replaces discs and pads if they're pitted or worn unevenly. A seized caliper may need replacing.
The rear calipers on the Model 3 and Model Y also carry the electric parking brake, so use a garage that knows the correct procedure for Teslas. Independent EV specialists do this routinely — it isn't a Tesla-only job.
Prevention
How to keep it from coming back
- Have the caliper clean and lube done every year, ideally before or straight after winter.
- Every so often, where it's safe and nothing is behind you, make a few firm stops so the pads actually clean the discs.
- Wash the wheels and arches after driving on salted roads.
