Tesla Service UK / FAQ

Tesla servicing FAQ

Quick, real answers to the questions UK owners actually search for — cost, intervals, warranty, MOT and who's qualified to work on one.

Last fact-checked: . Tax and legal specifics change — always confirm current figures on GOV.UK before relying on them.

Cost & scheduling

How much does a Tesla service cost in the UK?

There's no fixed annual service like a petrol car. Costs are per-item: tyres, brake fluid roughly every two years, cabin air filter, and wear items as needed. Most owners spend less per year overall than on an equivalent petrol car — no oil changes, no timing belt, no exhaust. Try the cost calculator for a fuller comparison.

How often should a Tesla be serviced?

There's no mandatory fixed-interval full service. Individual items have their own intervals — brake fluid roughly every two years, cabin filter periodically, tyre rotation based on wear. An annual inspection is still sensible even without a mandated schedule.

How do I book a Tesla service appointment?

Official Tesla Service Centers are booked through the Tesla app, not by phone. For an independent specialist, contact them directly — see our official centres list or independent specialists.

What actually needs doing

Do Teslas need oil changes?

No — no combustion engine means no engine oil or oil filter. Some models have a long-interval gearbox fluid, but it's nothing like an annual oil change.

What actually breaks or needs attention over time?

Suspension components, 12V auxiliary battery replacement, tyres, and occasionally infotainment or door handle mechanisms on older models. See our full tyres & brakes guide.

Why is my 12V battery flat when the main battery is charged?

They're separate systems — the 12V battery runs low-voltage electronics and can fail independently of the main pack's charge, particularly with age. It's a known, recognised issue, not usually a wider fault.

Who can work on it

Can any garage service a Tesla?

A growing number of independents, including HEVRA-accredited EV specialists, handle routine work competently. For warranty claims or software-linked components, an official Tesla Service Center is the safer choice. Always ask about specific Tesla experience before booking anywhere independent.

Does independent servicing void my warranty?

Routine maintenance at a competent independent garage generally doesn't void the manufacturer's warranty under UK/EU consumer law, provided correct parts and standards are used. Warranty claims themselves are typically handled through Tesla directly.

Can I get a battery replaced independently?

Full pack-level replacement is really an official Tesla Service Center job — genuine parts, diagnostics and warranty cover. If your car's still under battery warranty, go through Tesla directly to avoid voiding it.

Legal & money

Does a Tesla need an MOT?

Yes, from three years old, same as any UK car — largely the same core safety checks, minus emissions items that don't apply to an EV.

Do I pay road tax (VED) on a Tesla?

The previous EV exemption has ended for most EVs including Teslas under current rules. Check the current rate and any luxury-car supplement threshold directly on GOV.UK, since this is reviewed periodically.

Is an extended warranty worth it?

Depends on the car's age, remaining factory cover and your own risk tolerance — a financial decision we don't advise on directly. See the buying, selling & upgrading guide for what to check on warranty transfer when buying used.
