Before you book a service: the checklist
A few minutes of preparation that make any service visit, official or independent, go more smoothly.
Last fact-checked: . General guidance — always check your own model's specifics and current official sources before relying on it for a decision.
Document first
What to note and photograph before dropping the car off
Photograph existing bodywork condition (especially anything you didn't cause but might get blamed for), note the current odometer reading and state of charge, and write down the exact symptom or fault as specifically as you can — 'a clicking noise from the front-left over speed bumps at low speed' is far more useful to a technician than 'it makes a noise sometimes'.
What to ask
Questions worth asking when booking
Ask upfront what the visit will actually involve, whether a diagnostic fee applies if no fault is found, expected timeframe, and — for anything warranty-related — explicit confirmation of whether the work is covered before it starts, in writing if possible.
A quick checklist
The short version
Before you hand the keys over:
- Photos of the car's exterior condition from all angles.
- Odometer reading and charge level noted.
- The specific symptom written down as precisely as possible, including when it happens.
- Any relevant fault codes or app-reported alerts screenshotted.
- Confirmation of cost estimate and what happens if the issue can't be reproduced.
