Tesla cabin filter and A/C smell: when to replace and what to do

A musty smell from the vents or weak airflow is often the cabin air filter. It is one of the few regular maintenance jobs on a Tesla, and one of the simplest.

Last fact-checked: by the XKey Developments team. General guidance — always check your own car's details and current official sources. Repair costs vary by car and garage, so we don't quote prices: ask for a written quote.

Interval

How often should the cabin filter be replaced?

  • Model 3: every 2 years1.
  • Model Y: every 2 years. If your car has HEPA and carbon filters, Tesla gives 3 years for those2.

If you drive a lot in traffic, on dusty roads, or have hay fever, changing it sooner than that can help.

Symptoms

Signs the filter needs changing

  • A musty or damp smell when the air con or fan starts.
  • Weaker airflow from the vents at the same fan speed.
  • Windows that take longer to clear.

A smell that persists after a new filter can come from moisture in the A/C system itself. A garage with air-conditioning equipment can check and clean it.

DIY or garage

Can you do it yourself?

Tesla publishes do-it-yourself guides for replacing the cabin air filters and the HEPA filters on its service website2. Follow the guide for your exact model and year, as the filter location differs. If you'd rather not, a Tesla Service Centre or an independent EV specialist can do it, often alongside other checks. See DIY jobs ranked.
