Winter survival guide
Getting through a proper UK winter without any of the classic frozen-Tesla frustrations.

Frozen handles
Dealing with frozen door handles
Retractable door handles can occasionally freeze in place during a hard frost or after freezing rain. Most models have a manual override or a firmer push/pull technique documented in the owner's manual for exactly this situation — familiarise yourself with it before you actually need it in a hurry. Parking with handles less exposed to direct freezing rain where possible, and running a scheduled preconditioning session before you need to leave, both reduce how often this happens.
Preconditioning
Using preconditioning properly
Scheduling departure time with preconditioning enabled warms the cabin and battery while the car is still plugged in, using mains power rather than your driving range — genuinely one of the most useful winter features available, and worth setting up as a routine for a regular commute rather than only using it occasionally.
Ice, snow & range
Driving on ice/snow and planning for reduced range
Standard winter driving caution applies regardless of powertrain — reduced speed, increased following distance, and winter tyres if you regularly drive in genuinely snowy or icy conditions, since a Tesla's instant torque can make wheelspin easier to trigger on a slippery surface if not driven with appropriate care. Combine this with the range planning covered in our range by season page, since winter range reduction and slippery-condition driving often occur together.
