New vs used vs wait

A balanced way to think through the timing question, rather than chasing a constantly moving target.

Last fact-checked: . General guidance — always check your own model's specifics and current official sources before relying on it for a decision.

The case for buying now

When does buying now, new or used, make sense?

If you have a genuine, current need for a car, waiting indefinitely for an unannounced future update carries its own cost — you're paying for alternative transport or missing out on ownership in the meantime. A well-specified used or current-generation new model that meets your actual needs today is often the better decision than delaying for a rumoured future change that may not materialise on the timeline or with the exact features you're hoping for.

The case for waiting

When is it genuinely worth waiting?

Waiting makes more sense when there's a confirmed, announced change (not just rumour or speculation) that specifically matters to your use case — a announced new model variant, a confirmed significant price change, or a specific feature you know is coming that would change your decision. Vague 'something better might come along eventually' isn't a strong reason to delay a genuine current need.

Used as a middle path

Why used is often underrated

A used Tesla from a well-established production run, checked thoroughly (see our buying checklist), often represents better value than either extreme — avoiding new-car depreciation in the first year or two while still getting a mature, well-understood model rather than an unproven brand-new variant with less track record.
