How does Tesla depreciation actually compare to petrol cars?
It's shifted over time, and the old reputation isn't the full current picture. Early Tesla models genuinely did hold their value unusually well compared with a typical petrol depreciation curve — strong demand, limited supply, and no direct equivalent on the used market all helped. That's changed: increased EV competition, Tesla's own new-car price cuts (which drag comparable used values down with them), and a maturing wider EV market have pushed used Tesla depreciation closer to, and in some cases past, typical petrol rates in recent years.
What this means practically: don't buy or budget around Tesla's older "holds value brilliantly" reputation. Look up current used values for your specific model, age and mileage directly — Autotrader, What Car? and similar UK sites track this — rather than assuming history repeats. See our buying, selling & upgrading guide for the fuller used-Tesla purchase picture.
Reliability
What actually breaks on a Tesla after a few years?
Based on commonly reported owner and independent-garage experience, not official Tesla data: suspension components (control arms and bushings, worn faster by the car's weight and instant torque), the 12V auxiliary battery (a wear item separate from the main pack — see our FAQ on this), door handle mechanisms on some older models, and occasionally trim or panel-gap issues reported more on early production runs of a given model than later ones.
None of these are unique to Tesla in kind — every car accumulates wear items — but they're genuinely different from what an owner moving from a typical petrol car might expect to watch for. None of them require an official Tesla Service Center by default; a competent independent EV specialist can generally handle suspension and 12V battery work.
Software
What's actually hardware vs just software-locked?
Tesla has historically sold some features this way: the physical hardware is present in every car of a given spec, but a feature is only switched on if you've purchased or subscribed to it in software — Acceleration Boost (a performance upgrade on certain models) and some connectivity features have worked this way at points. Other features genuinely need different physical hardware and can't be unlocked in software regardless of what you pay.
The exact list of what's software-unlockable, what it costs, and whether it's a one-off purchase or subscription changes fairly often — including differences between UK and US offerings at various points. Rather than repeat a specific price or package list here that will likely be out of date by the time you read it, check Tesla's own current UK site for what's actually on offer today.
Winter
Does cold weather really hurt range that much?
Yes, and it's worth planning around rather than being caught out by. Cold temperatures reduce the battery's chemical efficiency and increase the energy cabin heating draws, and together these commonly cut real-world winter range by roughly 20-30% compared with mild-weather figures — sometimes more on short, cold journeys where the battery never fully warms up.
- Precondition the battery and cabin while still plugged in at home, before you unplug and leave — this uses mains power rather than battery charge to do the warming.
- Use seat and steering wheel heaters rather than the cabin air heater where comfortable — they use meaningfully less energy for the same comfort.
- Keep tyre pressures correct — cold weather naturally drops tyre pressure, and under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and reduce range further.
- Build in a bigger margin than usual on longer winter trips, and check charger availability along the route rather than assuming your usual warm-weather range estimate holds.
