Tesla Service UK / Guides / FSD: Worth It?
FSD: worth it or not?
An honest look at the cost-versus-value question, given what's actually usable in the UK today.
Last fact-checked: . General guidance — always check your own model's specifics and current official sources before relying on it for a decision.
The legal reality first
Start with what FSD legally means in the UK
Before any cost-benefit question, the legal position matters: no Tesla in the UK is currently authorised for hands-off, driver-not-responsible driving, whatever the package is called. See our full Autopilot & FSD legal guide for the detail. Any value judgment below assumes you understand you remain the fully responsible, attentive driver regardless of which package you buy.
What you're actually paying for
What does the money buy, practically, today?
In the UK context, FSD (Supervised) today mainly buys a more capable supervised driver-assistance experience — handling more of the driving task in more situations (junctions, turns, more complex roads) than standard Autopilot, while still requiring your full attention throughout. Whether that's worth the cost is genuinely a personal value judgment: some owners find it meaningfully reduces fatigue on long or repetitive drives; others find the requirement to stay fully attentive throughout means the practical benefit is smaller than the marketing suggests.
Questions to ask yourself
Questions worth asking before buying it
Before paying for it, honestly consider:
- What proportion of your driving is on the kind of roads where it currently performs well versus roads where you'd likely disengage it anyway?
- Is the current UK feature set (which can differ from the US) actually what you expect — check Tesla's own current UK feature page, not general marketing.
- Would a used car with FSD already included be better value than paying for it new or as an add-on?
- Are you comfortable that 'Supervised' means genuinely supervising it, not treating it as autonomous?
